In dogs, most forms of primary glaucoma are the result of a collapsed filtration angle, or closed angle glaucoma.

Anterior synechia causes closed angle glaucoma, which means that the iris closes the drainage way of aqueous humour which in turn raises the intraocular pressure.

The sudden, rapid elevation of pressure is more common with narrow / closed angle glaucoma which is more common to the breed than the slower open angle glaucoma.

Endocyclophotocoagulation is indicated for the treatment of both open and closed angle glaucoma and is performed in eyes which have already undergone cataract surgery or performed concomitantly with cataract removal.
